Until now, cash counts could only be done at the start or end of a session. Now you can check the amount in the drawer at any point during an active shift—just select "Count cash" from the Register icon. The result is logged automatically to the register session.
You could count cash only twice—when opening and when closing a session. There was no formal way to check "how much is in the drawer right now" during the day.
You can count at any point during an active shift. The result is logged automatically to the register session, so you can catch discrepancies early.
Open the Register icon in Shopify POS.
Select Count cash, then enter and confirm the amount in the drawer.
Confirmed counts are automatically logged to the register session.

Confirmed cash counts are automatically recorded to the register session. They can be referenced later as the basis for verifying discrepancies or handing off, serving as an operational audit point.
The operation is just two taps: Register icon > Count cash. No navigating to a dedicated screen or extra setup is required—it fits right into existing POS operations.
This feature is only available during an open session (an active shift). It's not about counting standalone without opening a session.
The improvement targets cash management at physical stores. It has nothing to do with online store accounting or payments, and applies only to store operations that handle cash.
The original post only explains in-store operations; the conditions for retrieving counts via the Admin API or Webhook, and for supported POS plans, countries, and compatible devices (hardware), arenot documented. If you plan to build automated integrations or feed this into an audit system, check the Help Center and a sandbox separately.
