1What's actually happening

Shopify Analytics' "Benchmark Comparisons" feature (benchmarking against industry peers) will be
completely removed on May 19, 2026. New data stops updating even before that.

What's going away

"Benchmark Comparisons" in Shopify Analytics. The view that compares your store's metrics against industry peer averages will disappear.

What remains / recommended alternatives

Metric Targets(set your own goal values and track them in reports)
Sidekick(ask the AI for personalized advice on your store's performance)

If you were citing Benchmark values in external reports, dashboards, Slack notifications, etc.,they will become missing data after 5/19. You'll need to swap out your monthly/weekly report templates in advance.

2Removal schedule

2026-05-07Announcement date
NoticeOfficial announcement of the feature's deprecation in the Shopify Changelog.
Before 5/19Migration grace period
Data updates stopNo new data will be added to Benchmark Comparison (the display remains, but with stale values). It's safest to complete your switch to an alternative by this point.
2026-05-19Full removal date
RemovalThe feature itself disappears from Shopify Analytics. Links and references will be disabled.
Guidance on specific export methods available before 5/19, or on how to retrieve past Benchmark values, isnot provided. If you need them, save them via screenshots or manual export before 5/19.

3Diagram of the alternatives

Benchmark Comparisons Comparison against industry peer averages Removed on 5/19 Metric Targets Set your own target values → track progress in reports Measure against your own goals, not peer averages = an inward-looking comparison Sidekick Ask the AI about your own store's situation Personalized advice = context-aware natural-language suggestions Build it into your workflow With reports + AI suggestions, run the PDCA cycle and make up for the lost peer comparison

Metric Targets

A feature that lets you set your own KPI target values within reports and visualize how close you are to hitting them."Are we above average?" gives way to "How are we doing against our own goals?" — that becomes how you measure.

Sidekick

Shopify's AI assistant. It answers natural-language questions like "How should I improve this metric for my store?" by drawing on your own store's data.Context-aware suggestions instead of quantitative comparison— that's the role it fills.

4Before / After comparison

ItemBefore(~5/19)After(5/19~)
Comparison against peer averages Yes Benchmark Comparisons No Feature removed entirely
Benchmark for measuring performance An outward-looking metric: the "industry average" Centered on "your own goals" via Metric Targets
Getting improvement insights Look at the gap from the average and interpret it yourself Ask Sidekick directly → personalized answers
Citing in report materials You could show "+XX% vs. industry average" Can't cite it anymore. Replaced by your own goal-attainment rate or AI comments
New data updates Still updated Stopped(since before 5/19)

REMOVED

1. It's a complete removal (not a deprecation)

Rather than "Deprecated," it's a Removed —that's how it's treated. As of 5/19 it disappears from the UI. Operate on the assumption that there's no interim workaround via a feature toggle.

2. Data updates stop before removal

There's a window where "no new data flows in, but the display remains." If you have a setup that automatically fetches Benchmark values, the risk of silently continuing to pull stale valuesexists.

3. The replacement is "inward targets," not "outward comparison"

Metric Targets compares against your own KPIs, not against other companies. Because the decision-making logic moves from "beating the average" to "hitting the target," you need a shift in mindset for how you design your reporting.

API ?

4. API and export specs aren't documented

The original post makes no mention of how Benchmark fields are handled in existing Admin API / Analytics integrations. If you have automated integrations in place, advance verification is essential.

5. The replacement is a two-pronged operation: "quantitative targets + AI suggestions"

With Metric Targets alone, you tend to end up at "we hit the target, but we don't know what to do next."A two-tier setup—quantitative targets via Metric Targets, individual actions filled in by Sidekick—is the natural sweet spot. The original post, too, presents these two side by side.

6Three use cases you can apply to your work

Target line
USE CASE 1

Swap the "vs. industry average" section of monthly/weekly reports for target attainment

Challenge
You've been reporting "+XX% vs. Benchmark" to executives and clients in your regular reports, but as of 5/19 those figures will no longer be available.
Action
In Metric Targets, set your own goals for revenue, CVR, AOV, and the like, and replace the figures with attainment rates. Revise your templates by 5/19.
Impact
Avoid the risk of data gaps while converting to a more action-oriented "target vs. actual" report.
Technical note
If you were pulling Benchmark values through Looker Studio / BigQuery integrations, review your ETL-side schema and SQL before 5/19.
ask Sidekick
USE CASE 2

Replace "how do we compare to the average" discussions in regular merchant meetings with context-aware suggestions from Sidekick

Challenge
Until now you've proposed initiatives using the logic "our CVR is below the industry average → room to improve," but the comparison metric is disappearing.
Action
Ask Sidekick directly—"What's behind the CVR decline over the past 4 weeks?" and "What should we try next?"—to draw out comments grounded in your own store's data.
Impact
The quality of the conversation shifts from "we're below the industry average—so what?" to "the next move that fits our own store's context."
Technical note
In the original post, specs on Sidekick's response content and the assumed data scope (period/channel) arenot documented. The reliability of its answers needs to be verified separately.
Past Benchmark Snapshot
USE CASE 3

Archive Benchmark values as "legacy assets" before 5/19

Challenge
Past Benchmark figures had been stockpiled as the basis for contractual reports and client proposal materials, but they will no longer be accessible afterward.
Action
By 5/19, take screenshots or CSV exports of each store's Benchmark screen and store them. Keep the snapshots in an internal tool such as Notion.
Impact
Preserve the evidence behind past proposals while transitioning smoothly to the new Metric Targets-based format after 5/19.
Technical notes
Guidance on specific export methods isnot described in the original article. Capturing it manually through the admin UI is the realistic approach.

7One-line summary you can use in a proposal

"Shopify Analytics's industry-average comparisons (Benchmark Comparisons) will be completely removed on 2026/5/19.
Going forward, set your own goals with Metric Targets and ask Sidekick for tailored advice in a two-tier operation.
Existing reports and automated integrations must be reworked by 5/19."
