1What's changing

Store staff can now create pickup orders, from the POS cart, for any pickup-enabled location.
The cart's "pickup location" row is nowtappable, and each store'sinventory is shown live, so staff can pick a store that actually has stock and turn it into an order on the spot.

Before: pickup assumed "the store you're in"

The pickup location row was fixed, and there was no way from the cart to switch to another store, compare inventory, and build a pickup order.

Now: switch stores from the cart with one tap

Tap the pickup location row → see each store's live inventory and choose one → create an order for pickup at that store. You can reliably pick a store that has stock.

2How it works: from cart to creating a pickup order

Store staff Serving a customer on POS The cart's pickup row "Pickup location" Tap Now tappable Live inventory Shown per store Choose a store by inventory Create a pickup order Store A (in stock) ✓ selected Store B (low stock) Store C (out of stock) Pick up at a store that has stock
Key point : Staff can pick a store that "can actually fulfill" the order right from the cart, without any extra steps. No phone calls or separate apps to check inventory — the entire pickup order is completed on a single screen.

3What's now possible (what the feature does)

Pickup row is now tappable

Tap the "Pickup location" row in the cart to open the store selection screen.

Switch stores with one tap

Switch between pickup-enabled locations with a single tap.

Live per-store inventory display

Each location's inventory is shown in real time, so you can choose a store that can fulfill the order.

The above is all the article explicitly states. Details such as pricing, inventory sync frequency, and the list of supported countries arenot includedin this announcement. Check the relevant page in the Shopify Help Center for details.

4Requirements

ItemRequirement
POS version 11.8 or higher Available on POS version 11.8
Plan POS Pro For POS Pro merchants
Number of locations Pickup-enabled locationstwo or more within the same country
The conditions are a set of three: "POS Pro + POS 11.8 + two or more pickup-enabled locations within the same country." Chains and franchise operations running multiple stores in the same country qualify as-is.

5How to use it (3 steps)

1

Tap the pickup row in the cart

In the POS cart, tap the "Pickup location" row to open store selection.

2

Pick a store with live inventory

Compare inventory across locations and select a store that can fulfill the order.

3

Create a pickup order

Confirm it as a pickup order at the chosen store. Staff can complete the whole flow inside the cart.

65 points engineers should keep in mind

1. Live inventory is a prerequisite

Each store's inventory is shown in real time, which means accurate per-location inventory data is the prerequisite for this to work. The accuracy of stocktaking and inventory sync directly affects the UX.

11.8

2. Version-dependent

POS 11.8 or later is required. If the POS app's update status varies from device to device, you'll end up with a mix of registers that can and can't use the feature.Keeping every device updatedis an operational prerequisite.

Pro Lite

3. POS Pro-only feature

This targets POS Pro. In organizations that also have Lite locations, you need to determine in advance which sites the feature applies to.

4. Requires "2 or more locations within the same country"

Even with multiple locations, cross-border configurations spanning different countries are not supported. Global organizations that separate entities and inventory by country should note that eligibility is determined on a per-country basis.

5. Omnichannel journeys gain a stronger in-store starting point

The "pickup at another store" experience (BOPIS / store-to-store transfer-like flows) that used to be assembled mostly on the ecommerce side can nowbe put together on the spot by in-store staff from the cart. It's worth revisiting your inventory location design and fulfillment operations (pickup notifications, handover ops) so they can also run with an in-store starting point. API/Webhook specifications arenot mentionedin this announcement, so if you need automated integration, verify it separately.

73 use cases you can apply to your operations

USE CASE 1

Prevent lost sales by offering "pickup at another store" when a store is out of stock

Challenge
The product a customer wants is out of stock at that store. Previously you'd either call other stores to check inventory or have the customer give up on the purchase.
Approach
Tap the pickup location in the cart → check live inventory at nearby stores → create a pickup order on the spot at a store that has stock.
Impact
Reduces missed sales (lost opportunities) in-store. Customers can immediately find a store where they're guaranteed to be able to pick up the item.
Technical note
The impact depends on each store's inventory accuracy. Make sure inventory sync is well-maintained for pickup-eligible locations.
USE CASE 2

Turn a small downtown store into a "showroom + order-and-fetch hub"

Challenge
Small downtown stores with limited floor space can't stock every SKU, so inventory skews toward larger suburban stores / DCs with deeper stock.
Approach
Let customers view the product at the small store, then designate another location with deeper inventory as the pickup point and turn it into an order via POS.
Impact
Even small stores can expand their sales opportunities, balancing inventory consolidation with the in-store experience.
Technical note
This requires setting up 2 or more pickup-eligible locations within the same country and meeting POS Pro / 11.8 across all stores.
USE CASE 3

Balance inventory across stores to sell through during sales and peak season

Problem
During sales, popular items run out at certain stores first while stock remains at others, creating an imbalance.
Solution
At the counter, set a store that has stock as the pickup location from the cart, redirecting demand to locations with remaining inventory to complete the order.
Impact
Absorb inventory imbalances between stores at the point of sale, reducing both lost sales and leftover stock at the same time.
Technical notes
Mapping out the post-pickup handoff operations (notifications, hold deadlines, cancellation handling) into a flow in advance keeps operations from breaking down.
