Shopify POS / Improvement

From Shopify admin,
manage all your POS devices in one place

The POS channel's Devices view has been redesigned into a single source of truth that shows every device running Shopify POS—tablets, phones, card readers, and mobile POS—on one screen. See each device's online status and POS app version, and remotely log out or revoke access if a device is lost or stolen.

1What's changing

The POS channel's Devices view now displays every device running Shopify POS .
Across tablets, phones, card readers, and mobile POS,a single source of truth for the entire fleet all on one screen.

Before: devices scattered

There was no easy way to see at a glance which devices were online or what version they were running, so you had to check device by device and location by location.

Now: listed in the admin

List all your devices under POS channel → Devices in Shopify admin. Check online/offline status, POS app version, and more to quickly spot devices that need attention.

2What you can see in the Devices view

Devices — fleet list Device name Status POS version Actions Register 1 (tablet) Online POS 11.9 Logged out Staff device (smartphone) Offline POS 12.0 Access removed Card reader (mobile POS) Online POS 11.9 Logged out

The article only says "and more." Details on the specific items arenot stated(check in the admin).

This visibility lets youmaintain consistency across storesandcatch devices that need attention early, according to Shopify.

3What to do when a device is lost, stolen, or removed

When a device is lost or stolen, or needs to be removed from the system , you can deal with it on the spot.

Log out remotely

Remotely sign out the target device to stop it from being used.

Remove access entirely

Delete the device's access rights and disconnect it from the system.

Removing a device requires staff permissions. Permissions Settings > Users (Settings > Users) can be reviewed and adjusted here. Sort out in advance who is allowed to remove devices.

4How to access it and prerequisites

Conditions for appearing in the list Requirements POS 11.9 or later Only devices running this version are shown
Permissions required for removal Staff permissions (check and adjust under Settings > Users)
Supported plans and countries In the article, not stated
POS earlier than 11.9devices don't appear in the Devices view. An older-version device being invisible doesn't mean it doesn't exist, so updating older-version devices first improves the completeness of the list.

5When to use this vs. MDM (important note)

For businesses with multiple locations, Shopify still recommends using MDM (mobile device management) software for app version management—as Shopify explicitly states.
Devices view

What you can do

Visibility into all devices (online status and version check), remote logout, and access removal. Managing them means "see, stop, and remove."

MDM software

The role it continues to play

Especially across multiple locations, app version management (distribution and updates). The Devices view only goes as far as "seeing" versions; controlled distribution is MDM's job.

6Getting started (3 steps)

1
POS

Open the POS channel

Go to the POS channel in Shopify admin.

2

Select "Devices"

The device list appears (devices on POS 11.9 or later).

3

Check status and take action

Check online status and version. If needed, log out remotely or remove access.

For detailed management, see Shopify's help article "Managing POS devices in Shopify admin" (linked from the source at the end of this article).

75 points engineers should keep in mind

1. Single source of truth (SSoT)

Tablets, phones, card readers, and mobile POS are consolidated into one screen. If you kept a separate device ledger in Excel, you can move it here.

11.9+

2. Display requires POS 11.9 or later

List completeness depends on the app version. Older-version devices are "invisible," so decide on an update policy before taking inventory.

3. Deletion is gated by staff permissions

Deleting a device depends on permissions. Define who can do it under Settings > Users. Permission design is security design.

4. Incident response for loss and theft

Contain it instantly with remote logout / access removal. You can lower the risk of unauthorized use from a stolen device right on the spot.

5. Version "distribution" is still MDM's job

For multi-location setups, pairing an MDM for app version management is recommended. The Devices view is see, stop, remove controls, anddoes not handle bulk app distribution or forced updates. Design your operations around this division of roles.

8Three use cases you can put to work

USE CASE 1

Make device fleet audits routine across a multi-store chain

Challenge
Register tablets and card readers are scattered across multiple stores, and headquarters can't tell which devices are live or what version they're on.
Approach
Use the Devices view to routinely check the online status and POS version of every device. Surface outdated versions and long-offline devices.
Impact
Consistency across stores, early detection of devices that need attention, and less time spent on audits.
Technical note
The list covers POS 11.9 and above. Older devices don't appear, so run this alongside an update plan.
USE CASE 2

Instantly contain incidents from lost or stolen devices

Challenge
When a store staffer's mobile POS device is lost or stolen, waiting for on-site action leaves a window open for unauthorized use.
Approach
Headquarters remotely logs out the device from the admin, and removes access entirely if needed.
Impact
Instantly cut off the risk of operations from a stolen device. Shorten incident response time.
Technical note
The deletion action requires staff permissions. The key prep is granting permissions to the responsible staff under Settings > Users.
MDM
USE CASE 3

Build a POS device operations runbook (visibility = Shopify / distribution = MDM)

Challenge
Trying to handle both device visibility and app updates with a single tool, and ending up doing both halfway.
Approach
Split the roles into a runbook: the Devices view for "status monitoring, stopping, removing," and MDM for "bulk version distribution and forced updates."
Impact
Achieve both consistent version control and clear incident procedures, even across multiple locations.
Technical note
Shopify itself recommends pairing an MDM for multi-location setups. The Devices view goes as far as "seeing" versions; the official line is to leave distribution to MDM.

9A one-line summary you can use in a pitch

"Get unified visibility into all your Shopify POS devices from the admin's Devices view.
List online status and app version, and remotely log out or revoke access when a device is lost or stolen.
Viewing requires POS 11.9 or later; removal requires staff permissions. For version rollout across multiple locations, using an MDM alongside is still recommended.
