Shopify POS / New feature

In Shopify POS,
"Buy in store, get it delivered"
Local delivery orders now supported

For items customers can't carry home, delivery can be arranged within the same checkout. The delivery zones and rates already set up for your online store are used as-is, so there's no more asking customers to reorder online or handling it through order notes.

1What's changing

Until now, when an in-store customer said "I can't carry this home, can you deliver it?", there was no way to arrange local delivery within a POS checkout.
Starting now, you can create local delivery orders directly at POS checkout.

Before: workarounds

Customers had to reorder online, or staff had to leave a note on the order and coordinate delivery manually.

Now: arrange delivery in the same checkout

Add shipping to the cart → if the address is within a delivery zone, local delivery appears as an option → complete payment. Preparation and fulfillment are also handled entirely in POS.

2How it works: the checkout flow at the register

Add shipping to the cart Enter the customer's address (During POS checkout) STEP 1 Within delivery zone? Uses the online store's zones and rates as-is Shipping rate options Standard shipping ✓ Local delivery Other rates Shown alongside other shipping rates Review and check out • Confirm the customer's phone number • Add delivery instructions (optional) • Delivery address and fee are displayed Cart / receipt / customer-facing display Then prepare and fulfill in POS
No need to create new delivery areas. The delivery zones and rates already set up for your online store are used in POS as-is.
Once created, orders can be prepared and fulfilled in POS the same way as local delivery orders placed through the online store.

3Staff permission changes (important)

ActionPrevious permission nameNew permission nameImpact
Create local delivery orders Ship to customer Create shipping and delivery orders Renamed. Uses an existing POS permission
Fulfill local delivery orders Fulfill shipping and pickup orders Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders Behavior change Previously, delivery orders could be fulfilled without this permission, but going forward this permission is required
Review staff roles before you start using local delivery in POS.Staff who need to fulfill delivery orders must be granted the fulfillment permission, or their work will be blocked.

4Fulfillment rules

No mixing

All physical items are delivered

All physical items in the order are delivered. A single order can't mix local delivery with shipping or in-store pickup.

Can be included

Gift cards and digital products

Gift cards and digital products can be added to local delivery orders.

Domestic only

Same country as the location

The delivery address must be in the same country as the location (store).

5Requirements

PRO

POS Pro

Requires the POS Pro plan.

11.16

POS 11.16 or later

Shopify POS app version 11.16 or later.

Local delivery set up for the location

Set up local delivery for the location in the Shopify admin.

The article doesn't cover supported countries, additional fees, or API/webhook behavior. See the Shopify Help Center for details.

6Checkout steps (4 steps)

1

Add shipping to the cart

If the customer's address is within the delivery area, local delivery appears alongside other shipping rates.

2

Select local delivery

Choose it from the list of shipping rates.

3

Enter phone number and instructions

Confirm the customer's phone number and add delivery instructions if needed.

4

Check out

The delivery address and fee are shown on the cart, receipt, and customer-facing display.

After checkout, you can prepare and fulfill the order in POS using the same flow as local delivery orders from your online store. There's no need to run separate workflows for in-store and online orders.

75 key points for developers

1. Settings have a single source

Delivery zones and rates come directly from your online store settings. There's no separate POS-only configuration, so you can design operations on the assumption that changing areas or rates applies to both channels.

2. The fulfillment permission change is breaking

Staff who could previously fulfill delivery orders without a permission will now need Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders to do so. Auditing staff roles before rollout is essential.

3. One order = one fulfillment method

All physical items must be delivered and can't be mixed with shipping or in-store pickup. If a customer wants to take some items home, you'll need to split them into separate checkouts (the article doesn't explain how to split them).

4. Information appears on multiple surfaces

The delivery address and fee are shown on the cart, receipt, and customer-facing display. If you've customized receipt templates or the customer-facing display, check how they render.

PRO

5. Three prerequisites

POS Pro, POS 11.16 or later, and local delivery configured per location. If only some of your locations are configured, it can only be used at those locations. How it's handled in the API and webhooks isn't documented, so if you have external integrations (OMS, delivery management), validate them in advance.

83 practical use cases

Large items
USE CASE 1

Closing sales of large items like furniture and appliances, delivery included, on the spot

Challenge
Customers like an item in store but can't carry it home, so staff tell them to "order online later" and the sale is lost.
Approach
During POS checkout, add shipping and select local delivery. Enter the phone number and delivery instructions, then take payment.
Impact
Capture in-store purchase intent and close the sale in a single checkout. No more re-ordering or handwritten notes.
Technical notes
Requires POS Pro and POS 11.16 or later. Delivery areas and rates reuse your online store settings.
Permissions
USE CASE 2

Supporting a pre-rollout staff permission audit

Challenge
Fulfillment permissions for delivery orders become mandatory, so staff who could previously handle these orders may suddenly be unable to.
Action
List which POS roles have Create shipping and delivery orders / Fulfill shipping, pickup, and delivery orders, define who creates and who fulfills, and assign permissions accordingly.
Impact
Prevents confusion on the floor on release day, and documents who can create delivery orders and who can fulfill them.
Tech note
The permission names have changed (formerly Ship to customer / Fulfill shipping and pickup orders), so internal manuals need updating too.
Online POS Delivery
USE CASE 3

Unify online and in-store delivery operations

Challenge
In-store delivery requests are tracked on notes or a separate log, so their workflow is separate from online delivery orders.
Action
Create in-store delivery requests as POS local delivery orders too, then prepare and fulfill them in POS the same way as online orders.
Impact
Delivery work runs through one workflow, reducing missed orders and duplicate tracking. Pricing follows the same rules as online for consistency.
Tech note
Delivery is available only within the same country as the location. All physical items must be delivered; they can't be combined with in-store pickup or shipping.
