1What's changing

Until now, Rollouts could include theme and checkout changes. Starting with this update, discounts can also be included in Rollouts .
Instead of releasing to everyone at once, test with a portion of traffic → review results → expand — this staged approach now works for discounts too.

Before: standalone release by start and end date

Discounts were published as standalone promotions with a start and end date. Once released, they applied to everyone.

Now: staged release and comparison with Rollouts

Show a new offer to a portion of your online store traffic and compare its conversion results against your existing offer. Expand when you're ready.

2How it works: adding a discount to a Rollout

One Rollout Theme changes Checkout changes Discount (NEW) Scheduled together A portion of traffic Released to part of the online store Conversion comparison Existing New Decide which to keep Expand When ready Launch more broadly
Rollouts : A way to schedule store changes, test them on a portion of traffic, and then expand. This update adds discounts to what it covers. This article doesn't cover details such as how to set the traffic percentage or any limits.

33 things you can now do

Schedule

Schedule discount changes

Show a new offer to a portion of your online store traffic, then expand when you're ready.

Compare

Compare offers

Test a discount change against an existing offer, then use conversion results to decide which to keep.

Launch together

Launch together

Schedule discounts to go live in the same Rollout as theme and checkout changes.

4Traditional date ranges vs. Rollouts

ItemDiscount alone (start and end dates)Included in Rollouts
Reach Not stated (published as a standalone promotion) Start with a portion of traffic , then expand
Offer comparison Not stated Supported Compare conversion results against an existing offer
Launch alongside other changes Not stated Supported In one Rollout with theme and checkout changes
Customer eligibility As configured in the discount As configured in the discount (still applies)
Role Still available New option

5What hasn't changed / What isn't stated

Customer eligibility rules still apply

Even when a discount is included in a Rollout, the customer eligibility rules already set on that discount continue to apply.

Start and end dates still work

If you just want to schedule a standalone promotion, you can still set it with the discount's start and end dates, as before.

Eligible plans, supported discount types, the allowed traffic split range, the metrics shown in comparisons, and API handling arenot stated in this article. Before adopting this, check the help docs (Scheduling and testing discounts) and the Shopify admin.

6How it works (3 steps)

1

Include a discount in a Rollout

Add theme and checkout changes to the same Rollout if needed.

2

Test with a portion of traffic

Compare conversion results against your existing offer.

3

Pick the offer to keep and expand

When you're ready, release it more broadly.

The flow above lists the features described in the article in order. Specific steps in the admin arenot stated in this article(see the help docs).

75 key points for developers

1. It targets "online store traffic"

The article only mentions delivering to a portion of online store traffic. Nothing is said about POS or other channels. If you run cross-channel discounts, check the behavior beforehand.

2. Eligibility becomes a two-layer filter

Besides whether the Rollout assigned a customer, the discount's own customer eligibility rules also apply. If a discount doesn't show up during testing, check both.

3. Theme, checkout, and discount ship as one unit

Because a campaign landing page (theme), checkout changes, and discounts can all be bundled into one Rollout, it's easier to avoid release timing gaps (such as the discount going live first).

API ?

4. No mention of APIs or webhooks

The article doesn't say whether you can add discounts to a Rollout or control the traffic split via the Admin GraphQL API. Projects that depend on automation need to verify this.

5. Separate from start/end date scheduling

Standalone promotions can still be scheduled with start and end dates, as before.Use Rollouts for anything that needs testing or coordination with other changes, and date ranges for simple limited-time sales. Setting an operating rule like this helps avoid confusion over which method was used to publish (the article doesn't prescribe this split; it's an operational suggestion).

83 practical use cases

10% Free shipping
USE CASE 1

Decide "which discount works best" with data

Challenge
Choosing between "10% OFF" and "free shipping" comes down to gut feeling, so there's no way to justify the decision.
Approach
Include the new offer in a Rollout and compare it against the existing offer on a portion of traffic. Keep whichever wins based on conversion results.
Impact
Discount decisions are backed by evidence, reducing the risk of eroding margins with discounts that don't work.
Tech notes
The article doesn't say which metrics are available for comparison. To track gross profit or AOV, check them alongside other reports such as Shopify Analytics.
Theme Checkout Discounts Simultaneous launch
USE CASE 2

Launch everything for big campaigns like BFCM in a single release

Challenge
At sale start, the campaign theme, checkout changes, and discounts are each switched over by hand, leading to timing mismatches and missed steps.
Approach
Bundle all three changes into one Rollout and schedule them to go live together.
Impact
Less late-night and early-morning switchover work, and no more incidents like "the landing page is live but the discount isn't working."
Tech note
Discount customer eligibility rules still apply, so test eligibility settings in advance for discounts such as members-only offers.
USE CASE 3

Reduce risk by rolling out aggressive discounts to a small share first

Challenge
Releasing deep discounts or new discount types to everyone at once can cause unexpected margin loss, and setup mistakes have a large impact.
Approach
Start by serving it to only part of your online store traffic, check the results and behavior, then expand.
Impact
You can catch and stop misconfigurations or underperforming promotions while their impact is still small.
Tech note
The article doesn't explain how to change the traffic split mid-rollout or how to roll back. Check the help docs before using this in production.

9One-line summary for proposals

"Discounts now work with Rollouts too: test them on a portion of traffic, compare conversion against existing offers, and launch them together with theme and checkout changes — all now possible.
Customer eligibility rules stay as they are. You can move discount decisions from gut feel to data."
