Global Catalog REST API is shutting down
Migrate to Global Catalog MCP by November 2

The Global Catalog REST API, deprecated in April 2026, will stop accepting traffic on November 2, 2026. After that, all requests will fail, including those for saved catalogs. The migration target is Global Catalog MCP, which implements the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP).

1What's changing

The catalog that lets you search and browse products across all Shopify merchants Global Catalog is changing how it's delivered:it's being consolidated from a REST API into MCP (a Universal Commerce Protocol implementation).
The REST version stops accepting traffic on November 2, 2026 . Apps still calling the REST API will stop working unless they migrate before then.

Shutdown: Global Catalog REST API

https://discover.shopifyapps.com/global/... — all requests to it will fail, including requests for saved catalogs.

Migration target: Global Catalog MCP

https://catalog.shopify.com/api/ucp/mcp provides it. Use the UCP catalog tools search_catalog / lookup_catalog / get_product .

2Timeline: from deprecation to shutdown

! April 2026 REST API deprecated Replaced by MCP October 9, 2026 This announcement (shutdown date confirmed) Migration window of just November 2, 2026 REST API shut down All requests fail After that MCP only
After shutdown, requests to saved catalogs will also fail . Using saved catalogs does not protect you from this change.

3REST endpoints being shut down

Endpoint: https://catalog.shopify.com/api/ucp/mcp(Universal Commerce Protocol implementation)

search_catalog

Search products across all Shopify merchants.Filters, pagination, and buyer contextare supported.

lookup_catalog

Look up products and variants by identifier inbatches.up to 50 per request.

get_product

Get full product details, withvariant selectionandavailability signalsincluded.

5REST → UCP tool mapping

6Migration steps (4 steps) and what stays the same

1

Replace REST calls with UCP tools

Following the mapping table above, switch each REST call to its corresponding tool.

2

Endpoint and agent profile

catalog.shopify.com/api/ucp/mcp as the destination. Include meta.ucp-agent.profile(the agent profile URL) in every request.

3
ID

Saved catalogs are specified by ID

Instead of the saved catalog URL, usecatalog.catalog_id and pass the ID.

4

Update schemas to UCP

Update your app so requests and responses match the UCP catalog schema.

What stays the same and how to try it

Authentication is unchanged

You can still generate a bearer token from client credentials in the Dev Dashboardand use it.

Try it before migrating

Shopify AI Toolkit , or useUCP CLI to run ucp catalog search and try out the tools.

For full specifications, see the official Global Catalog MCP documentation. Rate limits, pricing, and response field differences arenot covered in this announcement.

75 key points for developers

11/2

1. Hard cutoff (not a gradual degradation)

After the shutdown date, discover.shopifyapps.com/global/... requests toAll requests will fail. Saved catalogs are no exception. With less than a month between the announcement and the shutdown, take inventory of your call sites first.

gid://

2. Switch IDs to GID format

get_product accepts gid://shopify/p/{upid} or gid://shopify/ProductVariant/{id} . You'll need to convert the upid / vid values you passed as REST path variables into GID strings.

profile

3. Agent profile required on every request

meta.ucp-agent.profile : include your agent profile URLon every request. Add it in your shared HTTP client wrapper so no request misses it.

4. Two single-item lookups → get_product merged into one

Product ID and variant ID lookups now go through the same tool. It also returns variant selection and inventory signals, so the calling code needs less branching. For bulk lookups, use lookup_catalog(up to 50 items per call) and plan to split requests into chunks.

5. Authentication stays the same; the protocol and schema change

Bearer tokens are still issued from Dev Dashboard client credentials.Changes are limited to the endpoint URL, the tool call format, and the UCP request/response schemas. Saved catalogs are no longer specified by endpoint URL but by catalog.catalog_id . Include this in your schema changes as well.

83 practical use cases for your business

USE CASE 1

Turn a pre-shutdown inventory and migration of client or maintained apps into a project

Problem
You may not know which apps or batch jobs you've built call the Global Catalog REST API, so they could start failing without warning after November 2.
Approach
Search the codebase for discover.shopifyapps.com/global → list every use of the 4 endpoints → give the client a migration plan that replaces them with UCP tools, following the mapping table.
Impact
Prevent outages before the shutdown date. Because the deadline is clear, you can decide early whether the work falls under the maintenance contract or needs a separate estimate.
Technical notes
Places that use saved catalogs need to switch to catalog.catalog_id , so search for hardcoded URLs as well.
USE CASE 2

Rebuild it as the product search layer for AI agents and shopping assistants

Problem
While migrating, you want the REST-based product search to also work for AI agents (MCP clients).
Approach
Replace it with a setup that connects Global Catalog MCP's search_catalog(search with buyer context) and get_product(variant selection and inventory signals) as agent tools.
Impact
The migration becomes more than a straight swap: it adds agent support as extra value.
Tech note
Every request requires meta.ucp-agent.profile . Check the behavior with the Shopify AI Toolkit or ucp catalog search before designing.
REST ≤50
USE CASE 3

Consolidate bulk lookups in product data sync batches into lookup_catalog calls

Challenge
A comparison/aggregation service periodically syncs product data by making large volumes ofPOST /global/v2/lookup and single-item lookup calls.
Approach
Convert target IDs to GID format, split them into chunks of 50, and send them to lookup_catalog . Only where details are needed, supplement with get_product .
Impact
Syncing keeps running after the shutdown, and the batch call structure aligns with the UCP standard.
Tech note
Limit is 50 items per request. This announcement doesn't specify rate limits, so monitor failure rates and retries after migrating and tune accordingly.

9One-line summary for proposals

"The Global Catalog REST API will shut down completely on November 2, 2026. All requests will fail, including those for saved catalogs.
Authentication stays the same — just point requests to Global Catalog MCP and replace the 4 endpoints with 3 UCP tools.
. Finishing the inventory and migration before the deadline also lays the groundwork for AI agent support."
