Developer Changelog / Shop MCP

Shop MCP
With one MCP connection, an agent can handle the whole journey: find products, add them to a cart, and pay with Shop Pay

One MCP connection lets agents search more than 1 billion products in Shopify Catalog, create carts, and complete checkout with Shop Pay. Search doesn't need an API key. Existing Catalog API integrations don't change, and you don't need to do anything.

1What's changing?

Until now, agents could use Catalog to find products, but to pay they had to send shoppers to the store's website , and many shoppers dropped off at that step.
With Shop MCP, signed-in shoppers can now pay with their saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent .

Before: Find a product, then leave for another site

Agents find products in Catalog, but payment sends shoppers to the store's website. Many shoppers drop off during this redirect.

Shop MCP: Complete the purchase inside the agent

Search → cart → checkout → Shop Pay payment → order tracking, all through a single MCP connection.

2How it works: from search to completed purchase

Agent / app Claude / ChatGPT Your own agent shop CLI MCP Shop MCP mcp.shop.com Can read skill.md Sign-in with Shop Shopify Catalog Search & product details search_catalog / get_product The seller's Shopify store Cart creation & checkout complete_checkout Merchant admin Shown like any regular order status: completed Shopper reviews the total and payment method → The agent then completes the purchase with complete_checkout
Two URLs to connect to : the MCP server itself https://mcp.shop.com , and a skill description that MCP-compatible agents can read https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md.
Checkouts are created on the store that sells the product (Shop MCP doesn't process payments on its own).

3Shop MCP's four flows and tools

Search & product details

search_catalog
lookup_catalog
get_product
Reads Shopify Catalog.

Sign-in with Shop

Shoppers sign in just once. After that, search tools use their saved preferences.

Cart & checkout

Create a cart on the selling store → create a checkout. Complete it with complete_checkout; check its status with get_checkout.

Orders

search_orders
Finds orders and shipment tracking for signed-in shoppers.

The specific tool names for creating carts and checkouts are not statedin the original article. Check the related "Shop MCP overview" docs for details.

Implementing sign-in : MCP clients like Claude and ChatGPT handle sign-in for you. For your own code, use device flow .

5Before (Catalog only) vs Shop MCP

ItemBeforeShop MCP
Product discovery Yes Search with Catalog Yes Same Catalog (1B+ products)
Payment Redirects out Sends shoppers to the store's site In the agent Completed with Shop Pay
Drop-off risk Redirects often cause drop-off No redirect, fewer drop-off points
Connection method Use the Catalog API directly A single MCP connection (+ shop CLI)
Order handling — Appears as a regular order in the merchant's admin
Impact on existing integrations None Existing integrations that use the Catalog API directly need no changes or action

6Getting started (4 steps)

1

Try search with the shop CLI

Install the CLI and run shop search to see results in your terminal.

2

Connect your agent

Have your coding agent read skill.md , ormcp.shop.com as an MCP server in your config.

3

Sign-in with Shop

Paying with Shop Pay requires the buyer to sign in. In your own code, use the device flow.

4

End-to-end purchase test

The checkout succeeds when it returns status: completed and an order.

Before writing any code, start in the terminal with

# shop CLI をインストール(エージェントと同じサーバーを叩く)
npm install -g @shopify/shop

# 検索を試す(API キー不要)
shop search "ceramic coffee dripper"
Store

Which store the product belongs to

Price

Selling price

Inventory

Whether the item is in stock

Swap the query for products your agent handles to see the shape of the data your agent receives.

Search works without credentials. API keys can be created at Shopify Dev Dashboard (the original post doesn't say which features require one).

75 key points for developers

1. No webhooks at launch → poll

To get the checkout status, you need to poll get_checkout . Build retry intervals and timeouts into your design from the start.

2. Completing a purchase requires buyer confirmation

complete_checkout should be called only after the buyer has confirmed the total and payment method. Always build a confirmation step into your UI or conversation flow.

3. Implement sign-in with the device flow

MCP clients like Claude and ChatGPT handle this for you, but in your own code you need to implement the device flow. Carts and checkout work without sign-in, so you can roll it out in stages.

4. Success = status: completed + order

The pass criteria for E2E tests are explicit. Assert in your tests that the checkout returns status: completed and an order.

5. Orders are handled like any other order; the existing Catalog API isn't affected

Orders placed through an agent show up in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order.Merchants keep their existing fulfillment workflows as-is. Existing integrations that call the Catalog API directly don't need any changes, so migrating is optional and you can run both side by side.

83 practical use cases

USE CASE 1

Add in-chat purchasing to your shopping assistant or chatbot

Problem
It can recommend products, but buyers drop off when they're sent to the store's site to buy.
Solution
Add mcp.shop.com to your agent as an MCP server. Build the flow: search → cart → checkout → Shop Sign-in → after confirmation, complete_checkout .
Impact
Signed-in buyers can pay with their saved Shop Pay details without leaving the agent.
Tech notes
There are no webhooks, so check for completion by polling get_checkout . Custom clients sign in using the device flow.
USE CASE 2

Validate data for an agentic commerce PoC before writing any code

Challenge
You want to pitch an AI agent shopping experience to a client, but it's risky to start designing without knowing what real data comes back.
Approach
npm install -g @shopify/shop → Run shop search with the products you plan to use, and check how stores, prices, and inventory are returned before designing.
Impact
With no API key and no code, you can see the shape of the data the agent receives before you pitch.
Tech notes
The CLI calls the same server as the agent, so CLI results serve directly as the baseline for agent design.
USE CASE 3

Confirming merchant readiness for agent-placed orders and explaining operations

Challenge
Merchants ask whether their operations will change once orders start coming in through AI agents.
Approach
Explain that agent-placed orders appear in the admin just like regular orders, and share steps for a test purchase to verify status: completed and order creation.
Impact
You can show, with evidence, that the new sales channel works without changing existing fulfillment and order workflows.
Tech notes
The original post doesn't describe any merchant-side setup or enablement steps. It also doesn't say how these orders are identified (e.g., channel labels), so verify this hands-on.

9One-line summary for proposals

"Shop MCP gives AI agents, through a single MCP connection,
search across 1B+ products, carts, Shop Pay checkout, and order tracking .
Search needs no API key, and existing Catalog API integrations need no changes. Shoppers no longer have to leave for an external site to buy."
